Professional figure skater Wesley Rucker Campbell has gone through his entire career already being out of the closet – from competing as an athlete in major championships to now coaching up-and-coming skaters making their way in the sport.

“By the time I was 10 I knew I was attracted to guys,” Campbell told Outsports in an interview. “I don’t think I was ever exactly in [the closet]. I had this sense of self that was ultimately, if someone didn’t like me, then don’t like me. And I had to just roll with that. It’s not easy for anyone, but it wasn’t particularly hard for me. When I got to that age to make some choices, it wasn’t scary for me.”

Despite not getting to the Olympics, Campbell competed with some of the best figure skaters in the country, like Johnny Weir, Evan Lysacek, and Jeremy Abbott, to name a few.

In the interview, Campbell also opened up about touring with Broadway on Ice and performing in countries where homosexuality is still punishable by law. “We had conversations with the office about how to make certain things on social media private so it wasn’t a concern,” he explained. “We were very looked after and projected.”
