Tommy Lee just can’t stay out of trouble on social media. Whether it’s posting his, ahem, drumstick and bongos on main or retweeting OAN clips, he’s causing controversy with his posts. Though we’d prefer he stick to the former — as do many who called out the drummer over a recent instance of the latter.
Lee recently posted a 2017 clip from One America News Network where host Liz Wheeler went on a transphobic rant about trans people and people identifying “transracial” and “transabled” on his Instagram. Naturally, the hateful post garnered some instant backlash from his followers who called out the misinformation, including Questlove who wrote “OAN tho? #unfollow.”
Following the pushback, Lee deleted the original post and shared a new one explaining why he removed it.
It started strong as Lee made his allyship (and membership?) to the LGBTQ+ community clear.
“I deleted my ‘controversial’ post, because I am in no way transphobic or against the LGBTQIA+ community or any f***ing community...s***,” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m the gayest motherf***er around!”
Then things went off the rails. “I just don’t agree with how far some things have been taken,” Lee continued. “I just think it’s crazy that some people are blinding themselves because they feel they should’ve been born blind. I get being born female and identifying as male or being born male and identifying as female or whatever but when ppl start identifying as babies or animals... WTF! I posted that because it got me thinking (and you should too) about where this and our world is all going.”
Oh, Tommy, no!
The reality is that the world is going in a dark direction right now. According to the HRC, as of February “340 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in statehouses across the country. 150 of those would specifically restrict the rights of transgender people, the highest number of bills targeting transgender people in a single year to date.”
Perhaps focus on that, rather than whatever misinformation OAN was pumping out back in 2017.
