Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Greta Gerwig made an appearance at CinemaCon and shared a few behind-the-scenes tidbits about the production of the upcoming sure-to-be-blockbuster film Barbie.
"To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place," the official description reads. "Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you're a Ken."
Commiting to the bit with bleached tips and a "Greta Gerwig" T-shirt, Gosling told Deadline that he actually didn't know too much about the Barbie universe before being cast. "I have to be honest, I only knew Ken from afar, I didn’t know him from within. I didn’t know my ken-energy,” he joked, coining an instantly iconic phrase.
“Then one day I was bleaching my hair, and spiking my hair, wearing bespoke outfits and rollerblading down Venice Beach." Then he added, “I finally think I know what Dorothy felt like”
Robbie said stepping onto set felt like a “a dopamine hit.”
And Gerwig said Gosling took to the role too seriously at first, "like a drama," adding, “It was like Marlon Brandon playing Ken."
The cast members and director are clearly having a lot of fun.
Deadline also describes a new unreleased clip from the film that showed Barbie on a pink beach "enjoying her posh life with Ken, dancing the night away. But the world goes sour — burnt toast, cold water, and flat feet (the latter which makes her and her friends yell). Robbie’s Barbie seeks out Weird Barbie, played by Kate McKinnon who is like a rag doll. Weird Barbie tells perfect Barbie, 'You can go back to your regular life or you can know the truth about the universe.' Indigo Girls’ 'Closer to Fine' blasts during the trailer as Robbie’s Barbie embarks on a fresh journey that takes her to the real world. Will Ferrell’s Mattel Toy CEO learns of this and freaks out about the dolls making their way into the real world. There’s a moment when a guy on the beach slaps Barbie’s behind and she punches him out; Ken and her get arrested."
Barbie premieres in theaters July 21, 2023.
