After being forced to come out last year, Rebel Wilson is throwing caution to the wind and releasing a tell-all memoir, Rebel Rising.

The Pitch Perfect star recently told People that she’s been quietly working on the book for 18 months, after deciding that if this was something she was going to do, she was “doing it full out.”

“What I started doing is I just sat there by myself as if I’m just telling a story to a friend,” she said, admitting that she initially had trouble finding her voice for the project. “I just kind of found my writing style — as if I’m sitting opposite my friend, telling you all of my life’s deepest secrets, which is a bit scary.”

Wilson has had a busy year and a half, both personally and professionally. In addition to coming out last summer, Wilson announced her engagement to Ramona Agruma back in February, announced a new dating app, started shooting the feature film that will be her directorial debut, and welcomed her first child via surrogate last fall.

She admitted to wondering what her daughter will think of her memoir once she’s old enough to read it, joking that “she’ll probably be really embarrassed.” But she wanted people to get to know the real version of her, rather than the slightly exaggerated version of herself she said she played for the public in her early days as an actress.

“That was my first hurdle that I had to overcome,” she said. “I know a lot of people think I’m exactly like my characters like Fat Amy … but then there are just other sides.”

She also added that the book will pull from fun experiences meeting celebrities in addition to the more serious topics, and that she utilized her old diaries while writing her story.

“It was crazy to see my mindset and to see where I was at at those different ages, like 16 or 23, or getting rejected from all these drama schools and just being completely rejected, being an actor, and then thinking, ‘Oh, is this really what I should be doing with my life?’”

Rebel Rising is scheduled for release April 2, 2024.
