This isn’t Red, White & Royal Blue, y’all.
Spare, the latest memoir from Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, has featured a myriad of revelations from the former member of the Royal Family.
Among other things, Prince Harry talked about overhearing people discussing his sexuality based on things they’d hear in the press. “More than once I watched customers read about me, overheard them debating me,” he wrote in Spare. “In 2015, I overheard them frequently discussing whether or not I’d ever marry. Whether or not I was happy. Whether or not I might be gay.” More often than not, these interactions took place at the supermarket and in other public spaces that Harry frequented.
One time, the prince heard an elderly couple arguing with a cashier about his life choices. “I stepped forward, showed my face, cleared my throat: ‘Excuse me. Not sure what’s going on here, but I don’t think you should be speaking to her like that,’” he said in defense of the cashier.
When it comes to Harry’s relationship with the LGBTQ+ community, Spare also brought up a fierce disagreement that the prince had with Elton John at a point when the singer planned to serialize his autobiography to the Daily Mail. If you’ve seen Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix docuseries, you’re probably aware that they have a lot of beef with that particular publication.
Despite this very specific disagreement with John, Harry has proven to be a true LGBTQ+ ally over the years – which is in line with his mother’s support of the community and advocacy for HIV/AIDS awareness throughout her lifetime.
The gays love Prince Harry, and for good reason!
