Comedian Michelle Buteau just threw herself headfirst into the continued debate surrounding Dave Chappelle's transphobic jokes.
During her new Netflix special, which premiered Tuesday, Buteau told a funny story about a Black lesbian friend of hers—one in which identity was relevant, but wasn't the punchline. Afterwards, she took a beat to recap that fact to the audience, before highlighting the point she was trying to make.
"We can tell jokes and stories and not disparage a whole community," she said. "We can do that. We can make it funny. We just have to work at it, right? So if you guys ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you let him know that shit?"
It's been over three years since Dave Chappelle started facing backlash for taking cheap shots at the trans community in his comedy. During that time, he's refused to back off or listen to critics who have expressed frustration and unease with his "jokes" during a time when rightwing crusaders and politicians have been targeting trans rights.
In fact, just last year, Netflix released yet another special in which Chappelle continued going off about trans people and even admitted that he loves "punching down."
But Buteau isn't about that.
"Dave, it's not funny. It's dangerous," she continued as the audience cheered. "I can't believe somebody would make millions and millions of dollars for making people feel unsafe. That is so wild to me."
"I'mma tell everybody. I wanna make millions and millions of dollars for making people feel safe, seen, secure, heard, and entertained," she added.
