Marcia Gay Harden made it clear over the weekend that the fight for LGBTQ+ rights is personal to her family, sharing that all three of her children fall under the umbrella.
The actress joined other celebrities and performers at the Drag Isn’t Dangerous livestream telethon this past Sunday in an effort to raise money for LGBTQ+ charities and educate viewers about the discrimination being faced by members of the community through personal testimonials.
“What drives me is because it’s right and what’s happening now is wrong,” Harden said of pushing back against anti-drag and anti-trans legislation sweeping the country. “What drives me is — my children are all queer. My eldest child is non-binary. My son is gay. My youngest is fluid. And you know, they are my kids and they teach me every day.”
Harden has three children with her ex-husband, Thaddaeus Scheel — 24-year-old Eulala and twin 19-year-olds, Hudson and Julitta. The Whip It actress spoke about Hudson’s sexuality back in 2018, telling Us Weekly at the time, “I just want to make sure he gets to have a family when he wants one.”
Her devotion to her children, and to fighting for their rights, remains just as clear now.
“This [anti-LGBTQ legislation] is so fear-based and it’s spreading that kind of fear and hatred among other people,” she said during the telethon. “I believe this country will fight that.”
The event ultimately raised over half a million dollars, which is to be divided between GLAAD, GLSEN, Headcount, Black Queer Town Hall, The ACLU Drag Defense Fund, Trans Justice Funding Project, and Victory Fund.
