This couple is officially goooooooooooooals!
On Wednesday, Mar. 13, Australian soccer player Josh Cavallo announced his engagement to his now-fiancé, Leighton Morrell. The proposal, which took at the Hindmarsh Stadium (a.k.a. the Coopers Stadium) in Adelaide, Australia, was facilitated by Cavallo’s pro soccer team, Adelaide United.
“Starting this year with my fiancé [ring emoji; heart emoji],” Cavallo wrote in an Instagram post. “Mr & Mr Coming soon. Thank you @adelaideunited for helping set up this surprise.”
The athlete added:
“Your endless support has meant so much to me. You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible, and encouraged me to live everyday of my life authentically. It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started.”
Reports of Cavallo and Morrell dating started hitting the press around late 2023. Though he has usually kept a low profile, Cavallo started sharing more pictures and videos of his relationship with Morrell in recent months.
Unfortunately, Cavallo has had to endure homophobic abuse and harassment while playing for Adelaide United and getting homophobic messages and attacks from soccer fans. Like most other mainstream sports, the world of soccer is still a tricky environment for athletes to come out.
Despite the odds, Cavallo took the leap to come out as gay and has been living as his most authentic self ever since. He has now also found love and even got engaged — what else could we ask for?
Congratulations are in order to the couple!
