JoJo Siwa is dishing on her “gay awakening” and what prompted her along on her journey.
Every queer person has at least one of these moments, something that makes you stop and realize — “Oh.” For many of us, it can often be pop culture related, and Siwa, as it turns out, is no different.
Taking to TikTok, she explained that Demi Lovato’s “Cool for the Summer” had an impact on her when she was just 12 years old, even if she didn’t really understand why right away.
“I really, really liked it and listened to it all the time,” the Dance Moms alum said. “I did not know what it meant back then but now that I’m much older and I understand it, I know what it means.”

“Cool for the Summer,” of course, tells of Lovato’s feeling “a little curious” and becoming interested in another woman, before the singer actually came out themself.
That was only the beginning of the story for young Siwa, whose next moment of almost realization was when Jenna Dewan performed the Magic Mike routine to “Pony” by Ginuwine on Lip Sync Battle.
And really, who among us could blame her?

Ultimately, Siwa says she didn’t actually realize she was gay until dating a guy who wanted to have sex and realizing she was “grossed out by the thought of it” and “immediately knew.”
“Women are my gig, gotta go,” she joked.
Looking back at the pop culture moments that should have been a surefire sign that you were sliding on down the queer spectrum is a right of passage on its own, and there’s no doubt a bunch of Siwa’s fans can relate to both of hers!
