Ever since the release of the original version of Justice League in 2017, rumors started going around that Henry Cavill would be hanging up his Superman cape and wouldn’t return to reprise his role as Clark Kent in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). As a result, fans and the media started to speculate over which actors could possibly replace Cavill as the next Superman in the DCEU.

And yet, a lot of DCEU stans were upset about these prospects and held on tightly to the chance that Cavill would still consider coming back to the franchise – particularly after the well-received HBO Max release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. This hope also existed among gay fans who have a massive crush on Cavill and did not want to let go of his performance as Superman.

With the ever-growing involvement of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the DCEU, he was able to serve as a liaison between Cavill and the newly-merged Warner Bros Discovery studio and make sure that the original DCEU Superman could come back to the big screen. As seen in Black Adam, Cavill made his triumphant return as the character in a glorious post-credits scene.

Unfortunately, all that hype was for nothing. With James Gunn And Peter Safran being hired to build out the DC universe of films, Cavill will no longer reprise his role as Superman. "I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman," the actor wrote. "After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."
