Elliot Page may have had a lot of public support both times that he’s come out — initially as gay in 2014 and trans in 2020 — but there have still been some horrific reminders of the bigotry LGBTQ+ people face along the way.
The actor shared excerpts from his upcoming memoir, Pageboy, with People last week, including one regarding an incident with an “A-list actor” in 2014.
Without naming names, Page recalled running into an acquaintance at a birthday party just two months after he told the world he was gay — and the man apparently disagreed.
“You aren’t gay. That doesn’t exist. You are just afraid of men,” the A-lister allegedly told him. “I’m going to f—k you to make you realize you aren’t gay.”
Even though these were “just” comments and not followed up by the violent action they suggested, Page noted that jabs at heterosexuality and gender are something “queer and trans people deal with…incessantly.”
“These moments that we often like don’t talk about or we’re supposed to just brush off, when actually it’s very awful,” he said. “Or you have the more, like, subtle jokes. [In Hollywood] these are very powerful people. They’re the ones choosing what stories are being told and creating content for people to see all around the world.”
With the way Hollywood has been so slow to embrace LGBTQ+ content, frequently fails to market what they do have, and cancels shows with LGBTQ+ leads and fanbases at a seemingly breakneck speed, this isn’t particularly shocking to hear. And ultimately highlights how far even the most allegedly liberal worlds have to go towards real equality and inclusion.
