Sit down Matty Healy, Dianna Agron has something to say!
The actress spoke with Rolling Stone recently about her new Hulu horror film, Clock, her time on Glee, and, thanks to a sharp pivot from the interviewer at the end, some of the rumors about her and Taylor Swift.
“You have inspired music as well, since you’re in the liner notes as one of the inspirations for Taylor Swift’s song ‘22,’” Marlow Stern asked, prompting a strange denial from Agron.
“Me? Oh, if only! That’s more because of a friendship than being the inspiration for the song,” she replied. “But I would not be the person to ask about that. I cannot claim that!”
The conversation did not end there, as Stern then pointed out that Swift and Agron were “made out by the media and some fans to be in a relationship.”
“That is so interesting,” she said, after appearing not to know what the word “shipped” means in this context. “I… I mean, there have been many stories about my dating life that are wildly untrue. That’s funny.”
For those who haven't fallen down the rabbit hole of queer conspiracy theories of Swiftie fandom, before there was Karlie Kloss and kissgate, there was Swiftgron. The two were close friends in the early 2010s — close enough that eagle-eyed fans catalogued a boat load of “evidence” that there may have been more to it than that.
It’s also something Agron was asked about by Jimmy Kimmel (and admittedly denied) at the time. Combine that with the way fans still always bring up Swiftgron theories and reference Taylor in response to many of Agron’s social media posts, and the fact that she was deep into tumblr during the early days of Glee, and the suggestion that she’s never heard these rumors before or doesn’t know what “shipped” means starts to feel pretty flimsy.
Rolling Stone has been going a little hard on the Gaylor content lately, so asking Agron about a rumored relationship with the singer from a decade ago might not be that out of character, but it’s still overall very out of left field, although fans undoubtedly have their own theories as to why.
But one thing we do know for sure is that Agron, with whom Swift once spent an April 29th, may have broadly pointed out there have been a lot of false rumors about her dating life over her career, but she didn’t actually say this was one of them.
