From Green Bay, Wisconsin, Calahan Skogman played competitive basketball and football his entire life. In fact, he went on to compete in the NCAA Division II for both sports while he was a college student at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Skogman followed that up with a transfer to the University of Wisconsin, where he first started to study acting and ultimately changed his major to Theatre Performance. In 2019, he graduated from the USC School of Dramatic Arts with an M.F.A. in Acting.

After starring in short films such as G.I. Jose, Smile, and Catch, Skogman was eventually cast as the character of Matthias Helvar in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the Shadow and Bone trilogy of books. This queer-inclusive show premiered its first season in 2021, and a second season dropped in March 2023 on the streaming service.

Skogman’s character, Matthias, had a recurring role in season one but became a main cast member in the second season. Matthias is a witch-hunter, known as Fjerdan Drüskelle in the story, who is involved in the capturing of Nina Zenik (played by Danielle Galligan) on the show.
