Visually speaking, Theo James is pretty much perfect to take on the role of George Michael, and Gay Twitter has been abuzz with the possible casting ever since the White Lotus actor dropped by Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
During his guest spot, Cohen asked James if he would be interested in playing Michael in a biopic, to which the actor said “Oh, yeah! I’d love that.”
In fact, he agrees he’s ideal for the role considering their shared Greek heritage. “He’s a lot of Greek, and I’m a lot of Greek. Put that Greek together, and you get falafel,” he quipped.
While many would be delighted to see the hunky actor getting intimate with male actors on screen (especially if he brings along that prosthetic), not everyone is excited at the prospect of James playing the iconic queer singer.
Adam Lambert in particular took issue with the conversation. “Yay another straight man playing a gay icon,” he wrote on Twitter adding an eye-roll emoji. It’s a fair criticism following a series of straight actors taking on the roles of queer icons like Taron Egerton playing Elton John in Rocketman and Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.
Lambert’s reaction received pushback on Twitter, but Drag Race season 15 star Marcia Marcia Marcia was quick to come to the singer’s defense. “Seeing a lot of negativity toward Adam Lambert in the responses to this post,” they wrote on Twitter. “Queer actors are constantly rejected for their queerness while their cishet counterparts are praised for being ‘brave’ for accepting queer roles. Queer people should get to tell their own stories.” Touche.
While it remains to be seen if James will get tapped for the role, what we do know is that a biopic is in development. So, we’ll just have to wait and see how this... develops.
