A lesbian couple in Bedford, Texas is upset that their daughter was denied admission to a private school. The school says it does not agree with their lesbian lifestyle, and would not be a good fit for the child since it does not match the personal values being taught to her at home, according to Fox News.
Jill and Tracy Harrison got married in Canada in 2006. Last month they completed admission forms to enroll their daughter, Olivia, at St. Vincent's Episcopal School. On the forms, Jill wrote her name in the space for “mother” on the forms. Where it said "father" she crossed out the word and wrote "mother," and then put Tracy's name in that blank.
Officials from the school said they assumed Tracy was a man. The couple attended a parent's night, after which Olivia was denied admission.
The school issued a statement saying its decision was based on what it considered best for all students and “in conformity with scripture and our own church’s doctrinal standards.”
“We regret the disappointment the mother feels. It is clear, however, that enrolling the child in a traditional Christian school, such as St. Vincent’s School, would not foster her own personal values at home. And it might undermine the moral instruction of our clergy and teachers in the minds of our schools students and parents. Our prayers are with Olivia and her mother,” the school said.
The Harrisons chose St. Vincent's after a friend recommended the school, and they liked the low student-teacher ratio.
The school claims it would not admit children of heterosexual couples living together but not in a formal marriage. However, the Harrisons are not convinced there is any truth to that statement.
