A recent study in the journal Pediatrics shows that being raised by same sex parents is no hindrance to healthy psychological development, Reuters is reporting.
The study is the first of its kind to follow children of lesbian couples from insemination to adolescence. The results are showing that the children of the same-sex couples were more competent in school, had fewer social problems, broke fewer rules and were less aggressive.
Seventy-seven families of both girls and boys took part in the study.
"There is not a single study that has shown there are any problems in terms of psychological adjustment,” Dr. Nanette Gartrell of the University of California, San Francisco said,"The things we know that make for good parenting are love, resources and being very involved in your child's life."
Researchers can not pinpoint why same sex couples are showing more success than straight parents, but one reason might be that lesbian mothers have to plan their parenthood carefully and were prepared to help their children though any discrimination they might face.
Reuters is reporting that about a quarter million American children are living with same-sex parents.
