Released yesterday, the trailer for Roland Emmerich's new drama promises a gripping retelling of the fights which broke out between police and the LGBT community at New York's Stonewall Inn in 1969. Jeremy Irvine stars as fictional character Danny Winters, a homeless gay youth who becomes involved in the action. Explaining why he chose to make Danny up rather than tell a real person's story, Emmerich told Vulture: "If you can cast a central character with one or two famous actors, you have a good chance to get the movie financed, but in my case, I knew there was not really one central character in the Stonewall riots." We might have suggested Stormé DeLarverie, the butch lesbian who threw what may have been the first punch at Stonewall, or Brenda Howard, the "Mother of Pride," or the trans women of color who were integral to making Stonewall happen, but never mind...
'Stonewall' will be in cinemas across the US from September 25.
