NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the statue's extended presence on Sunday, noting it fuels powerful feminist discourse.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told New York Daily News on Sunday that everyone's new favorite feminist symbol, Kristen Visbal's Fearless Girl, will make its spot opposite Wall Street's Charging Bull home until early 2018.

"In her short time here, the Fearless Girl has fueled powerful conversations about women in leadership and inspired so many," De Blasio told the Daily News. "Now, she’ll be asserting herself and affirming her strength even after her temporary permit expires—a fitting path for a girl who refuses to quit."

The statue originally had its permit to appear facing down the bull for a week, according to the Daily News. That permit was later extended to last one month.

State Street Global Advisors, the fund manager behind the statue's installation just before International Women's Day, included the symbol as a part of its campaign to spur positive change toward more equal inclusion of women in business.

State Street wants every company targeted in its campaign to include at least one woman at a board-level position and to demonstrate steps taken toward narrowing the gender gap, Lori Heinel, State Street's deputy global chief investment officer, told Business Insider.

While the statue's latest permit extension is an honorable and pleasant reaction to public demand for its prolonged stay, the Change.org petition and public advocate who spearheaded the recent campaign demanded the statue's permanent stay. And while we acknowledge that things like adding a permanent public installation take time, we're hoping more change is on its way.
