Charlize Theron's Feminist Teachings Are on Fire, Even Furiosa Would Be Proud
In a recent interview at the 2015 International Cannes Film Festival, Charlize Theron (the incredible woman behind great films like Snow White and the Hunstman, Monster, Prometheus, and Young Adult) basically shut down all the "men's rights activists" aka haters claiming that her most recent project, Mad Max: Fury Road, was nothing more than "feminist propaganda."
Although she had the best response ever, this isn't the first time Charlize has gone on-the-record about feminism. Here are some of her best feminist and Furiosa-approved teachings that the world needs to know about.
“I think when we say ‘feminism’ people get a little freaked out because it’s like we’re being put on a pedestal. But George (the director of Mad Max) has this innate understanding that women are just as interesting and complex as men and he was interested to discover that. Through his need and want for the truth he made an incredible feminist movie.”
Take that, you so-called "men's right's activists."
“Girls need to know that being a feminist is a good thing. It doesn’t mean you hate men. It means equal rights. If you’re doing the same job, you should be compensated and treated in the same way.”
Droppin' all sorts of truth bombs!
“Women have conquered the world. And, with everything we go through, it's about time we had a female president. I don't think we're that far away, but it should have happened already.”
Preach!
“Looks alone won't get you that far. It may get you in the door, but there's always somebody younger, somebody prettier. You have to rely on something else.”
We're guessing she's talking about her great acting skills.
(When asked if her beauty is ever a problem) “No. But it seems to be a problem for journalists.”
Dear mainstream news media, there's more to someone's story than their looks!
“I think women are way more conflicted than men, and I think we come from a society that's very comfortable with the Madonna-whore complex, you know. We're either really good hookers or really good mothers.”
Single-handedly calling out double standards? No biggie.
“People just aren't willing to see conflict, or ugliness or the more flawed side of life through a female character's eyes. I mean, can you imagine a woman playing Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver? When Robert De Niro does it it's fine, (but) people are very uncomfortable about seeing that through a woman's eyes. We aren't allowed complexity.”
And calling out women's disparity in media representation? Yes, hunni, she does that too!
“Well, guess what? I'm a sexual creature. There's nothing wrong with that. Why do we have to be ashamed of being so many different things? Why do we have to be only one thing, a good mother or a hooker? I don't think that what's under my clothes is evil. I'm a woman, I'm feminine. And I like the way I look. And I celebrate that. And I don't make excuses for that.”
She definitely has #NoShameInHerGame!
