Tomboys: When and When Not to Tuck in Your Shirt. Pay Attention

Tomboys: When and When Not to Tuck in Your Shirt. Pay Attention

It's up for debate.

Hey Tomboys,

The other day I was wearing a shirt and I thought, "To tuck or not to tuck?" It's simple enough when your dress shirt has "tails" that tail you it's meant to be tucked in (see what I did there). There's also the fast rule that if the shirt has a flat seam at the bottom, it's meant to be worn untucked.

But what about all the tops inbetween? I turned to the Art of Manliness Blog (read: helpful as well to MOCs, or masculine of center womyn) for a quick guide, reposted below, of course with additional SheWired commentary:

When or When Not to Tuck a Shirt:

If your shirt doesn’t have visible tails, there’s more leeway on whether you should leave it tucked or untucked:

Undershirts

"These can always be tucked, and absolutely should be if there’s any chance of them poking out from beneath your other layers. For best results, tuck undershirts into underwear (more on this below)." - Art of Manliness. PS. Lianna speaking: I've also read that a gray undershirt under a dress shirt is better than a white undershirt will blend better, especially if the button up dress shirt is white.

Polo shirts

  • "They have an even hem and can be worn untucked, but are often tucked in for a little dressier look, especially by golfers. Rugby shirts, their long-sleeved cousins, are almost never tucked in, however." - Art of Manliness PS. Lianna here: I know all ya'll damn lesbians have a rugby shirt. Do not tuck it in.

Turtleneck/roll collars

  •  "When worn under a sports jacket or blazer, these are often tucked so that the belt buckle is visible. On their own, it’s better to leave them untucked." -Art of Manliness. PS. Lianna here: Translation: if you are wearing a Turtleneck...go ahead and tuck your face completely into the neck, unless you are skiing or pretending to know how to ski, in which case layer that shit you sexy beast. With that said the 90s are coming back in every way so who knows. Don't hate if you see me in a turtle neck next week.
  • Hawaiian shirts
  • "These and any other loud-print shirts don’t get tucked no matter what their hem looks like. Seriously, just don’t. Nothing looks dorkier than a tucked-in vacation shirt." - The Art of Manliness. PS Lianna here: Cute that old geezers think of these as only vacation shirts. Hawaiin print shirts are popping up on hipsters all over Southern California.  The photo above is of a great Kisses x Arrowhead Aloha Unisex Shirt. They have several in their line that are pretty tomboy. Hand me a damn womanly Mai Thai too.
  • T-shirts

  • "Opinions are going to vary widely here. Some subcultures love the tucked T-shirt with the visible belt buckle; others will think you look like a total nerd. It depends a lot on the shirt, the belt, and the trousers, as well as your overall style. In general, don’t tuck the T-shirt unless it’s a deliberate style statement." - The Art of Manliness. PS. Lianna here: I don't know if this is private school talking, where there were multiple t-shirt checks all day every day to make sure they were tucked in a certain way; but do what you want with your t-shirts. If someone gives you shit, you tell me, I got your back. PS this is a Jean-Michel Basquiat Tee by Deer Dana X The Impossible Cool. Also, I am a completely a lesbian, but the man in this photo is beautiful. No one tell my mom. Also, I want this shirt 100% more than I want this man.

  • Well Tomboys, that is it! I hope you feel more confident on and when and when not to tuck in a shirt. There are also specific ways to tuck in a shirt, so feel free to click back here to the Art of Manliness blog to continue reading about the military tuck, the trouser tuck, and the underwear tuck. Until next time!
