The past 24 hours have been bittersweet for Marvel fans with two brilliant series coming to an end: The Avengers and Netflix’s Daredevil.
Marvel has released a two and half minute trailer for Avengers: Endgame, the final conclusion to Thanos’ successful mission of ridding half of the world’s population. (Unpopular opinion: it was a brilliant way to trim the fat of the lesser superhero characters who were taking up space.)
The trailer depicts Tony Stark recording a final goodbye message, along with Ant-Man and Hawkeye making appearances.
Twitter fans responded to the trailer with heartbreak and a healthy dose of humor.
In a surprising move, Netflix announced yesterday that the fan-favorite series Daredevil has been canceled.
"A lot of us really expected to keep going, and I certainly did," Charlie Cox who plays Daredevil told EW. "The truth is, I felt like we had a lot of stories to tell, and although I understand [the cancellation], I’m very saddened by that."
While there have been rumors surfacing that Netflix is slowly killing shows to move content over to Disney streaming devices, this may be a situation more similar to Sense8. While wildly popular among a few devoted fans, the production value on a show like Daredevil is insanely high. It has the best-choreographed fight sequences potentially ever. (Read Vulture’s "How Daredevil Filmed Its 10-Minute Prison Fight in a Single Take.") None of that is cheap.
Hopefully, Matt Murdock will reemerge somewhere else, because Marvel desperately needs more nuanced heroes.
RIP Daredevil! You will be missed!
