The political right is continuing to push their agenda banning or restricting drag shows across the United States, and it was only a matter of time before RuPaul came forward to speak out against it.
Standing against an American flag green screen backdrop, Mama Ru called legislation opposing drag “a classic distraction technique,” suggesting that Republican politicians contributing to this faux moral panic are “distracting us away from the real issues that they were voted into office to focus on: jobs, healthcare, keeping our children safe from harm at their own school.”
“But we know that bullies are incompetent at solving real issues,” he continued. “They look for easy targets so they can give the impression of being effective. They think our love, our light, our laughter, and our joy are signs of weakness, but they’re wrong. Because that is our strength.”
At least 11 states are currently working to ban or restrict drag performances, with proposals that are often convoluted in terms of what the actual reach would be, but are centered around criminalizing the self-expression of LGBTQ+ people.
RuPaul’s Drag Race has brought drag to the mainstream, but it’s the smaller shows and underground performances over the decades that brought not only drag queens, but the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, to the point where a show like RPDR could even exist.
“Drag queens are the marines of the queer movement. Don’t get it twisted, and don’t be distracted,” RuPaul concluded. “Register to vote so we can get these stunt queens out of office, and put some smart people with real solutions into government.”
