Olympic ice dancer Guillaume Cizeron has officially come out as gay after a photo he shared of his boyfriend on Instagram led to some well-founded speculation.
Cizeron took home the silver medal for France at the 2018 Winter Olympics, alongside his dance partner, Gabriella Papadakis. The pair have won numerous champions throughout Europe over the years, and have broken multiple world records with their competition scores.
While Cizeron has never publicly confirmed his sexuality before recently, he says that he never felt that he was in the closet.
“It was quite funny, the reaction of people following this photo,” he told French LGBTQ magazine Têtu this week. “I would not consider myself in the closet before…So I don’t really consider it coming out. Even though I have never spoken publicly about my sexual orientation, I am one of those who think that it is not something that community members should have to do.”
The photo in question was a cute shot of Cizeron with his boyfriend in bed on International Day Against Homophobia (May 17), and was simply captioned “Celebrate love” alongside a note about what day it was and a heart emoji.
Cizeron admitted that while he always felt LGBTQ people shouldn’t have to come out as long as straight people don’t have to come out, he came to realize that his visibility in the sports world could have a positive impact.
“I told myself that by living in Montreal, one of the cities where we feel the most free as a person from the LGBT community, we tend to forget how this is not the case everywhere,” he said. “Over the past few months, I have talked about it with many people around me who are part of the community, some of whom are activists, and who have told me several times how [coming out] could have an impact.”
Cizeron says that the overwhelming majority of responses to his low-key coming out have been positive, though it was undoubtedly made easier by the fact that everyone in his private life has known for so long.
As for the boyfriend? The Olympic skater is keeping tight-lipped on his identity.
“It’s my most serious relationship so far,” he said. “We live together, he is French… I will not give too much information and say too much to respect his privacy. What I can say is that he is 33 years old, and we have been together for more than 3 years.”
