Pole Vaulting World Champion Shawn Barber just came out as a gay in a Sunday evening Facebook post.

The Candian athlete won first prize at the 2015 World Championships in Bejing with a record-breaking 5.9-meter jump, and competed in the 2016 world Olympics in Brazil last year.

Barber made the announcement about his sexuality on his Facebook page

"Gay and proud! Thank you to my parents for being such a great support. I continue to grow as a person and have a great support group. My parents are my greatest support and have helped me through a lot recently. To my friends, you are always my friends and i love you too!"

Congratulations Shawn!
