Another feud between Britney and Xtina in the year 2022?? Say it isn’t so!
Britney Spears has been using social media to speak her mind freely ever since the end of her conservatorship, and it hasn’t always necessarily been the best move.
Recently, she shared a quote attributed to Rodney Dangerfield that reads, “I found there was only one way to look thin: hang out with fat people.”
In and of itself, that would have been cringeworthy, at best, but Spears made things worse with her own added caption about never getting to choose the people she had been around, seemingly implying her “confidence would have been a bit better” if she had been able to surround herself with people bigger than her.
And that’s when she dragged Christina Aguilera into it.
“I wish I could have chosen the nannies for my children … my dancers … I mean if I had Christina Aguilera’s dancers I would have looked extremely small,” Spears wrote. “I mean why not talk about it??”
Well, one reason not to talk about it is that it’s pretty rude and offensive, something many commenters immediately picked up on and called her out over.
“Body shaming others is not the move,” wrote @bustastace.
“Oof. Love Britt- but this was in bad taste,” @devynheaven agreed. “Body shaming to make yourself feel better is not where it’s at.”
“Is the only thing that gives a woman confidence how thin she is?” asked @amie_arson. “Sad.”
Spears and Aguilera have a tumultuous past, frequently being pitted against one another during their concurrent rising to fame. Aguilera had previously shown support for the attempts to free the “Gimme More” singer from her conservatorship, even after Spears seemed to drag her for not speaking out enough.
But apparently, this was the last bit of frustration for Aguilera, who unfollowed her peer on Instagram after the post. Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato reportedly followed suit, according to fans keeping tabs on the timing of these things (neither currently follows her on the platform).
Update (Tuesday, September 13 at 4:52 p.m. ET):
Later in the day, Spears shared a new Instagram post reacting to the social media accusations that she was body-shaming Aguilera.
“By no means was I being critical of Christina’s beautiful body, it is what it is !!!” the singer wrote in the caption. “I flew to see her show once and the main thing I noticed was the difference of our people on stage !!! By no means did I even mention Christina, look at my post !!! I was inspired by her show and she is a beautiful woman of power … Thank you @xtina for inspiring me !!!”
Spears added, “To be honest, I’m not trying to be critical of anybody. What I posted is a projection of the insecurities I deal with all the time as a result of how my parents and the media have treated me … I would never intentionally body shame anybody because I know what it feels like … I struggle with this because of how I feel about myself, not because I hate how anybody looks.”
“I feel like my family knew I was insecure and people were trying to purposefully feed into this insecurity by not letting me have a choice in the people who were on stage with me,” she concluded. “I appreciate you all being understanding with me as I figure out this new life I’m living !!!”
