Laverne Cox Laughs It Off After Being Mistaken for Beyoncé at US Open

People were so sure it was Queen Bey!

A case of mistaken identity at the US Open left people cackling — especially Laverne Cox.

Monday’s tennis tournament was a big deal, not just because the US Open is always a big deal, but because it will likely be the final professional tournament Serena Williams ever plays.

Gatorade even released a new commercial over the weekend paying tribute to the tennis legend, narrated exquisitely by none other than Beyoncé.

With that recent connection, as well as their longtime friendship, it wouldn’t have been surprising if Bey had been in the audience for the event, and at least one person briefly swore that she was.

“#Beyoncé at the #USOpen,” wrote Choni Francis, sharing a zoomed in video of a masked woman in the stands.

He followed up with video from another angle, convinced he was looking at the media’s coverage of Beyoncé

But it wasn’t her.

Corrections soon rolled in from people who had paid closer attention to the celebrities present at the event, and their respective fashions, noting that the masked woman was actually Cox — and others had made the same mistake.

Cox herself even chimed in with a casual “Girl it was me” on Twitter, and a much more amused post on Instagram in which she wrote, “Not me getting mistaken for @Beyonce at the #USOpen tonight then trending on Twitter as the internet cackles over the mistaken identity. These tweets are funny as hell.”

Beyoncé is indisputably an icon to be reckoned with, and anyone would be lucky to be mistaken for her, but the exact same could be said for Cox — and this basically proves it!
