Joe Serafini and Frankie Rodriguez don’t just play boyfriends on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, their romance is just as real off-screen as well. Seriously, we’re still not over how sweet this is.
But they made us feel all the feelings again over the weekend when they took the stage together in New York City to sing a duet during Serafini’s concert at The Green Room 42. The song: “Only Us” from the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen.
Serafini introduced the song by telling the story of the couple’s first meeting. “We met literally at East High School and I mean, sparks flew. The rest is history I guess,” he said while bringing Rodriguez on stage. “We made history as the first openly gay couple of the High School Musical franchise, and three years later, here we are, still in love,” he added as the crowd cheered.
He went on to add just one more detail, just to make sure there were no dry eyes left in the building. “This is one of our favorite songs to sing together at home,” said Serafini.
Music plays an important part in the couple’s life and the same is true for their fictionalized characters, Seb (Sarafini) and Carlos (Rodriguez). One of the sweetest moments in the series is when Seb begins to worry that the only reason that Carlos is with him is because they’re the only out kids at East High. But Carlos sets the record (not-so) straight with (what else?) a song called “In a Heartbeat”. “When all’s said and done, you’ll always be the one that I keep coming back to. In a heartbeat I choose you,” he sings to Seb — cue the audience crying happy tears.
Now take all those emotions you felt watching the series and multiply them, because in the video below, all that love is real.
