UPDATED What's Going On With Ezra Miller?: A Timeline
When Ezra Miller made headlines for a video showing them appearing to violently choke a fan in Iceland back in 2020, many thought that might mark the beginning of the end of their career. But the incident instead went unaddressed by Miller, who seemingly faced no consequences.
Fast forward two years, and Miller has been in the news for both questionable and allegedly criminal behavior so frequently the last few months it’s been difficult to keep up. From bar fights to accusations of alleged grooming a pre-teen, here’s a rough timeline of what’s been going on.
March 2022: Cops were called to deal with Miller causing a disturbance at a bar.
Video appears to show Miller getting into a dispute with a woman outside of Smith’s Union Bar in Hawaii. Video of the police talking to them was obtained by TMZ after Miller’s arrest at the end of the month for an unrelated incident.
March 27, 2022: Miller is arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and harassment.
Hawaii police said that Miller “became agitated while patrons at the bar began singing karaoke.” They were accused of screaming and grabbing the microphone away from a woman singing “Shallow” before later lunging at a man playing darts. They were released on bail.
March 28, 2022: Police were called on Miller again.
The actor was reportedly escorted off a private property “after a resident called police asking for advice about removing to houseguests from his property,” according to Hawaii Police Assistant Chief Kenneth Quiocho. This happened hours after Miller made bail.
March 29, 2022: A couple takes out a restraining order on Miller.
Miller had reportedly been staying with a couple at a hostel in Hawaii, but they took out a restraining order on the actor after claiming Miller threatened them and stole items including a passport and wallet.
“I will burn you and your slut wife,” Miller is accused of telling them.
A judge granted a temporary restraining order based on the accusations, which were related to the call to police the previous day.
March 30, 2022: Hawaii police say this has been the tip of the iceberg.
Police say that they have received 10 calls about Miller since March 7, mostly for relatively minor things “such as filming people at a gas station, refusing to leave the sidewalk area of a restaurant and arguing with people,” according to AP News.
April 6, 2022: Rumors that WB might finally drop Miller from The Flash begin to circulate.
Rolling Stone exclusively reports that Warner Bros. and DC executives held an emergency meeting to debate whether or not to keep Miller on as Barry Allen/The Flash in the DC ‘verse. The Flash had already had its release date pushed back and is currently slated for summer 2023.
The source told Rolling Stone that Miller wasn’t violent on set, but had “frequent meltdowns,” causing additional drama for the already difficult production. At this point, many fans have voiced support for Miller being removed from the role, and wonder why the Iceland choking incident was allowed to slip under the radar.
April 13, 2022: The couple drops their restraining order against Miller.
The Associated Press reports that the couple who requested the TRO be dismissed. William Dean, the couple's lawyer declined to comment on why his clients were no longer choosing to pursue the petition.
April 19, 2022: Miller is arrested in Hawaii again.
Less than a week after the TRO was dropped, Miller was arrested after allegedly throwing a chair at a 26-year-old woman at a house in Puna and leaving her with a head injury. They were arrested at 1:30 a.m. during a traffic stop and charged with second-degree assault. Once again, they were released shortly thereafter.
May 9, 2022: Warner Bros. denies reports that Miller is being cut.
Variety reporter Adam B. Vary said he has been told that WB and DC are not replacing Miller in The Flash, which finished production months prior.
May 16, 2022: Footage of Miller’s arrest surfaces.
Bodycam footage shows Miller telling police that referring to them as “sir” counts as a hate crime.
June 8, 2022: Miller accused of grooming 18-year-old since she was 12.
The parents of 18-year-old Tokata Iron Eyes asked a court to intervene after alleging that Miller is a danger to their daughter, whose life the actor has been in since they were 23 and she was just 12 years old.
Court documents obtained by TMZ accuse Miller of providing Tokata with alcohol, marijuana, and LSD over the years. They claim the actor prompted Tokata to drop out of private schooling (which Miller was paying for) in December, and has been taking her around with them to various locations for months, while maintaining control of her social media, phone, and finances.
"Ezra uses violence, intimidation, threat of violence, fear, paranoia, delusions, and drugs to hold sway over a young adolescent Tokata,” her parents claimed.
June 9, 2022: Tokata denies accusations on Instagram.
Tokata posted a video to Instagram claiming to be in control of her own social media and accusing her parents of not trusting her to make her own decisions. This also drew attention to a prior statement she had made on the platform shortly before her parents’ accusations went public, denouncing their account of events and thanking her “comrade Ezra Miller” for providing “loving support and invaluable protection.”
June 15, 2022: Miller mocks police, deletes Instagram.
Miller shared memes to Instagram appearing to mock police for not being able to find them and Tokata, including one that read “you cannot touch me i am in another universe.”
Miller subsequently deleted their Instagram.
June 16, 2022: Another restraining order is taken out against Miller.
The family of a 12-year-old in Massachusetts was granted a restraining order against the actor for a February incident in which the child’s mother and a neighbor claimed a visiting Miller started screaming at them, showed off a gun that had been concealed, and claimed the girl was “an elevated being” who “would be lucky to have someone like me guide them” amidst other inappropriate and uncomfortable interactions.
June 23, 2022: Miller is accused of housing three kids and their mom at a farm.
Rolling Stone accused the actor of hosting a 25-year-old woman and her three very young kids at a farm in Vermont, noting that this is an unsafe environment for the children and alleging that unattended guns can be found at the property. In turn, the 25-year-old mom sided with Miller, telling the publication that “they may have firearms for self-defense purposes, [but] they are stored in a part of the house that the children never go in… My kids are able to relax more into their healing because of the safety and nurturing Ezra has been providing for them.”
June 30, 2022: Warner Bros commits to releasing ‘The Flash’ in June 2023.
Despite all of these controversies involving Miller, Warner Bros. has committed to releasing The Flash in June 2023, which would be right on schedule (via Variety). The tentpole film cost a reported $200 million to be made by the studio.
June 30, 2022: More information comes out about the 2020 choking incident.
Variety acknowledged speaking to the woman seen being choked by Miller in Iceland shortly after the incident, and finally shared her side of the story in a lengthy piece that also included an account from a woman named Nadia who had an uncomfortable altercation with the actor in her home in February 2022.
August 4, 2022: Miller accused of running a cult.
More people opened up to Insider about Miller’s time in Iceland, including how they turned an Airbnb into a “makeshift commune” that lended itself to rumors they were starting a cult. Miller’s propensity for violent outbursts was reiterated among this group, and those interviewed expressed concern about the way everything always had to revolve around Miller and nobody was allowed to question them or their judgment.
The article also included more information about Tokata and her parents, including an accusation that Miller had been grooming her since she was 12 years old. Their former music collaborator, Oliver Ignatius, also claimed to have cut ties with Miller over their “verbally abusive” behavior towards Tokata, something she still denies describes the nature of her relationship with the actor.
August 4, 2022: Warner Bros. Discovery CEO praises 'The Flash.'
On the heels of canceling the release of Batgirl entirely, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made the mind-boggling decision to sing the praises of several of its upcoming male-centric superhero films, starting with The Flash. This aggravated ongoing outrage among fans furious that the studio would stay dedicated to platforming someone accused of endangering multiple people while axing other projects.
August 7, 2022: Miller charged with felony burglary.
The actor was located by police and charged with felony burglary after security footage showed them stealing alcohol from an unoccupied home in Vermont earlier this year. The arraignment is set for September 26.
