“Consent is important."
Last Monday, the internet was set ablaze with images of a nude Jesse Williams.
The Grey's Anatomy star appears fully naked in the Broadway show Take Me Out where he plays Darren Lemming, a recently out baseball player who struggles with the consequences of sharing his sexuality with the world. Williams just landed a Tony nomination for the role.
The theatre has a strict policy against recording anything onstage and even requires audience members to put their phones in Yondr pouches to protect the actors' privacy. Clearly, someone broke the rules, then posted the recorded video on the internet.
Williams broke his silence about the fiasco on Thursday. “I’m not down about it. Our job is to go out there every night, no matter what,” he told The Associated Press. “I’m not really worrying about it. I can’t sweat that. We do need to keep advocating for ourselves. And it’s wonderful to see a community push back and make clear what we do stand for, what we don’t.”
“Consent is important, I thought. So, let’s keep that in mind universally,” Williams concluded. Producers will be beefing up security in the wake of the violation. “Theater is a sacred space, and everybody doesn’t understand that. Everybody doesn’t necessarily respect or regard that in a way that maybe they should, or we’d like.”
