Lizzo made her love for the LGBTQ+ community clear in a recent interview with Ryan Mitchell for Audacy's CHANNEL Q.
The pop star has a new album coming this summer titled Special, performed alongside Harry Styles at Coachella last week, and even teased something special for this upcoming Pride Month.
When it comes to her love for the LGBTQ+ community, "I’m here for the liberation of all people," she said. "I don’t have any intersections in my mind about the people who have been marginalized, who deserve to be celebrated and uplifted, so I feel very parallel to the queer community, because I’m fighting for the same freedoms that they’re fighting for. We can march together and make this a party. That’s why I’ve always been so connected to the Queer community. Drag Queens were the first people who put my music on, and saw my music, and identified heavily with it in the beginning. I would be so excited to do Pride this year for a few reasons. I can't talk about it right now, but when the music comes out, I think people are going to be very happy.”
While she doesn't identify as queer, she can certainly relate to the community. “Their experience is so unique to them, and one I haven’t experienced myself, so all I have sympathy and empathy towards people growing up having a political agenda set against their happiness and growth," she said.
"I know what my experience has felt like growing up that the people that were in charge, who were supposed to protect me, were against me, didn’t want me to live, didn’t want me to be successful, and didn’t want me to be here, this far, and I was somehow able to do that, and it’s not easy…I wish I could destroy the system with my bear hands, that’s the part that people don't know about me, but I wish I could tear the system down because it’s not designed for the growth and health of the people.”
