HBO’s upcoming documentary on the Broadway hit Spring Awakening hasn’t even dropped yet, but comments from original cast member Lea Michele have already worked social media up into a frenzy.
You may have seen a number of choice anecdotes bouncing around Twitter in recent days, including the former Glee star admitting she confessed her love for scene partner and BFF Jonathan Groff before he had fully come to terms with being gay.
“Finally, I cornered him at a party, and I said to him, ‘Why don’t you love me? Just love me. Why can’t you love me? Date me. Love me,’” she said. “And I just saw this look in his eyes, and in that moment, I knew. I realized in that moment, ‘This is the end.’ And I need to protect this. This is intense.”
The two played teens exploring their sexualities and gradually falling for one another in Spring Awakening, night after night as the show exploded into popularity in the mid-2000s, so it makes sense that they would become close.
“Lea and I were so young, we were still figuring out who we were,” Groff said. “We were playing these parts, but we were working shit out with each other.”
His co-star also claimed that she showed him her “whole vagina” during the show after he admitted he had never seen one and asked about hers.
“And I took a desk lamp and showed him. That’s how close we are, but I’ve never seen Jonathan naked. I’ve never seen his penis,” Lea said.
Clearly, they’ve remained close over the years, with Lea even blurting out in a recent interview with People that she would gladly carry his baby if he ever needed a surrogate.
It’s hard not to be simultaneously curious and terrified of what other unexpected remarks will pop out of Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known when the doc premieres on May 3, but we’ll definitely be watching.
