Barbra Streisand, living legend and star of the 1976 version of A Star Is Born, revealed in a recent interview with Australian news source The Project that she preferred the remake when it was supposed to star Beyoncé.
"At first, when I heard it was going to be done again, it was supposed to be Will Smith and Beyoncé," Streisand said in the clip. "I thought, that’s interesting. Really make it different again, different kind of music, integrated actors. I thought that was a great idea. So, I was surprised when I saw how alike it was to the version that I did in 1976."
"That's probably a compliment to you," replied the reporter.
"I don't know. I thought it was the wrong idea, but, look, it was a big success, so I can’t argue with success, but I don’t care so much about success as I do originality.”
When it was rumored to be remade in the early 2000s, there were talks that Beyoncé and Smith were going to star. The project was shelved and picked up years later by Bradley Cooper and eventually, Gaga was cast as Ally.
It doesn't quite feel like Streisand is shading Gaga, though some fans are interpreting it that way. It just sounds like she'd rather have seen the film with a different cast. Who's to say what might've been, but maybe the next remake will bring that fresh approach Streisand is dreaming of.
