Yikes though.

People aren’t thrilled with Colleen Ballinger after she seemingly queerbaited fans by having her long-running YouTube character, Miranda Sings, act like she was about to come out as LGBTQ.

Miranda Sings has been around since the early days of YouTube, and features Ballinger completely sincerely playing the character of a woman who believes she is a brilliant singer and iconic star but is in actuality a complete disaster of a human being.

A tweet posted to Miranda’s account last week revealed that she had a “surprice annuncement in 30 mins,” and featured the perpetually smirking Miranda standing in front of a rainbow background.

Ballinger herself is presumably straight, so people were confused as to whether she might be coming out, or if she was going to say that her character was queer, or what was going on.

But in typical Miranda style, nothing is quite as she presents it, and the whole thing was actually just Miranda coming out as a Meghan Trainor fan.

The “joke” didn’t play well with fans, who didn’t really understand why Colleen thought it would be funny.

It appears the video was meant to poke fun at those YouTubers and influencers who make a big show about having an announcement to make, dropping clues to make fans think they’re coming out as LGBTQ, but then revealing something completely different instead — all for the clicks. But unfortunately, making fun of that specific category of video by making that type of video doesn’t really play well.

Fortunately, Ballinger took fans’ comments to heart, and deleted the tweets and video. She also offered an apology directly to several fans, saying that “this shouldn’t have been tweeted. queer baiting is wrong. period… and the fact that I disappointed people in [the LGBTQ] community is devastating.”

Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
