At least once a year for the past four (yes FOUR!) years, heterosexual singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has had to field questions from the press about his sexuality and address the persistent rumors of him being closeted, and because this year has been an absolutely chaotic dumpster fire where there are little to no rules or surprises, 2020 was obviously no exception.
In a recent interview with UK publication The Guardian, the Canadian popstar, yet again, touched on the of his perceived gayness to inquiring minds.
"There was a desperation for me to come out as being gay, which is such a ridiculous thing," Shawn said when asked about accusations of being in a fake relationship with former Fifth Harmony member and fellow pop singer Camila Cabello. "I got upset because I know people who are gay who haven’t come out yet and I know the suffering they experience because of that."
He concluded:
"It’s just completely ignorant and insensitive of people to be on that sh*t."
After already addressing the rumors of him being gay back in 2016, and after a fake coming-out tweet went viral back in 2017, Shawn has had to constantly reiterate his heterosexuality in a November 2018 interview with Rolling Stone and in another interview with The Guardian in April 2019, and to be frank, it's all getting kind of annoying.
"I thought, 'You f*cking guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out,'" Mendes told Rolling Stone, speaking about how he was accused of being "too feminine." "That’s something that kills people. That’s how sensitive it is. Do you like the songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I’m gay?"
He continued:
"Maybe I am a little more feminine—but that’s the way it is. That’s why I am me."
Can we just all agree to leave Shawn Mendes alone so we don't ever have to hear him talk about his straightness in the press ever again?? Pretty please???
