"Release your labels of me."
Juno and The Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page came out as transgender on Tuesday in a moving letter posted on his social media.
"I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot," Page wrote. "I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self."
Friends and fans rallied around Page, including his wife, Emma Portner. "I am so proud of @ElliotPage. Trans, queer, and non-binary people are a gift to this world," she said on Instagram alongside her repost of Page's letter. "I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much."
While most of the comments on Page and Portner's posts were supportive and uplifting, the news was bound to attract a few anti-LGBTQ+ trolls.
"But now you know you have a husband. I hope you are not a lesbien," one wrote in the comments.
"I hope you know my sexual preferences and gender identity are none of your business," Portner clapped back. "For me to decide, thank you. Release your labels of me. I am as fluid as can be."
Preach Emma! Another commenter summed up the sentiment beautifully:
"Who you love is WHO YOU LOVE. It really is that simple. Emma loves [Elliot] because he is Elliot. Love is actually that all encompassing, and you seem like your life needs more of it."
