Jonathan Van Ness is making the rounds in D.C., fighting for LGBTQ rights!
The Queer Eye star met with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi yesterday to discuss the Equality Act. ICYMI, the Equality Act would ensure protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identification in employment and housing, among a few other areas. Also known as that thing Taylor Swift keeps posting about.
The Equality Act was already passed in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, but it has not gone up for a vote in the Republican-held Senate yet.
“‘We have to pass the Equality Act,’ @speakerpelosi said to me,” JVN wrote on Instagram after the encounter.
He asked her how that would be possible with Mitch McConnell still around, and says she responded that “the voters in states with Republican Senators MUST put pressure on their Senators to force McConnell to bring the #equalityact up to vote.”
“The Equality Act is exactly the legislation that would protect LGBTQ people from the discrimination we would face if the Supreme Court rules in favor of the Trump Administration and Justice Department petition to be able to allow employers to FIRE LGBTQ people based on sexual orientation and gender identity.”
Van Ness has had a busy time lately, having also met with Rep Robin Kelly in D.C. and speaking with presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren on the phone after publicly endorsing her as his preferred candidate.
“The moment I knew I was endorsing @ewarren was last month when I misplaced my HIV meds. It cost $3500 to replace them out of pocket with “amazing” platinum level insurance,” he tweeted the other day. “Healthcare shouldn’t be for profit ever, it’s a human right.”
Van Ness only recently came out as HIV positive in anticipation of his memoir, Over the Top, and is already working to tear down the stigmatization that still surrounds it. And, of course, join the fight for more affordable care.
