John Travolta Weighs in on His VMAs Taylor Swift/Jade Jolie Mix-Up

It was a highlight of the show.

One of the highlights of the VMAs last weekend was that hilarious moment where John Travolta nearly presented Taylor Swift’s VMA to…a drag queen dressed like Taylor Swift. Now, the Grease star is speaking out about the near-mix up.

Jade Jolie was on stage with the rest of the popstar queens from Taylor’s “You Need to Calm Down” video as she won the award for Video of the Year. And as the large group swarmed the stage, Travolta got a little lost trying to pick out Taylor in the crowd.

“So the video has me trying to find her, and you know, I thought it was funny the way it was interpreted,” he told Hot 93.3. “And it’s cool, I didn’t care. If I shave my head, it’s headlines. If I mispronounce something, that’s headlines, and I know that about me.”

Jolie took it in stride, laughing and hugging Travolta as he looked a little closer and realized it was a different Taylor he was looking for.

“Sometimes I fantasize, what if I had given it to [Jolie]?” Travolta joked. “That would have been awesome. I should have just gone all the way with it.”

Taylor totally would have loved that. Jolie later revealed that she told the singer about the near-mix up afterwards when they were backstage.

“She was tickled and thought it was so funny. She joked and was like, ‘You totally should have went for it!’”

Of course, this wasn’t Travolta’s first viral award show flub. He made headlines back in 2014 when he super casually introduced Idina Menzel as “Adele Dazeem” at the Oscars.

But fortunately he’s got a good sense of humor about all these mistakes, even handing over the card for Video of the Year to his co-presenter Queen Latifah, saying “I shouldn’t do this, because I’ll just mispronounce shit and fuck it up! You do it!”

If only that could have saved him.
