Don't Ask Troye Sivan If He's a Top or a Bottom
Why do all gay guys get asked this?
The gays have historically always dealt with far more invasive questions than the heteros (and as we all know, trans folk have it even worse) — even from members of our own community. But Troye Sivan is OVER IT.
Express, an LGBTQ magazine based out of New Zealand, published an interview with the singer in their recent issue. But the reporter clearly crossed a weird line when he asked Sivan the question gay guys inevitably get asked by someone who has no business knowing:
“Top or bottom?”
Sivan’s response in the mag was a simple “Ooo…definitely passing!” but he addressed the awkwardness of the situation on Twitter.
“I thought about asking the interviewer about his absolute fave sex position after that last question, but then I remembered how wildly invasive, strange and inappropriate that would be,” he wrote. “Didn’t stop him though!”
“I thought about asking the interviewer about his absolute fave sex position after that last question, but then i remembered how wildly invasive, strange and innapropriate that would be. Didn’t stop him though!”— 👼🏼 (@👼🏼) 1567023714
And that wasn’t the only unfortunate question posed to Sivan during the interview. He was also asked if he thought his boyfriend would give him a “hall pass” to hook up with openly heterosexual singer Shawn Mendes. That in and of itself may have not been the worst, but the interviewer quickly followed it up by asking if things got “too steamy” when Sivan and Mendes actually met — something Sivan obviously very quickly shot down with a series of ‘no’s.
What makes this all particularly disappointing is that it was a gay magazine asking the questions. Yeah, we want Troye to dish on his secrets, but there are just some things you’d think we’d know better than to ask in 2019.
But Sivan seems to have the proper solution to this whole issue moving forward.
“Next time I’ll just do a Twitter q&a”— 👼🏼 (@👼🏼) 1567023714
He also clapped back at Out Magazine, who called Sivan's reaction to the question "hypocritical."
“Last I’ll say on this, but disappointing to see that @outmagazine, an LGBT publication, was the only one to miss the mark so much on the reporting of this”— 👼🏼 (@👼🏼) 1567102181
“I speak about sex in my music on my terms, when I’m in control, and writing music that is going to be close to my heart forever. That does not open the flood gates + give anyone a pass on basic manners and allow them to ask about the ins and outs of what i do in bed”— 👼🏼 (@👼🏼) 1567102181
“There’s no shame in anal sex or any kind of sex - i just don’t want to talk about it over the phone to a complete stranger”— 👼🏼 (@👼🏼) 1567102181
“.@outmagazine i love you guys and all the work you do, just didn’t feel like this was a fair take on this. Okayyyyyyy I’m done n never talking about this again bc my parents read this stuff and i feel weird. love to all”— 👼🏼 (@👼🏼) 1567102181
Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
