Halsey Slams Comment That Her Sexuality Is a 'Marketing Strategy'
Don’t fuck with Halsey. Honestly, just don’t.
The singer received flack this weekend from someone on Instagram after she posted a set of photos of herself on stage with a rainbow flag, captioned “peak bi gurl evolution.”
A “fan” commented that “rainbow is the new marketing strategy,” an obvious attack on the fact that more and more celebrities are either coming out as queer and proud or are very blatantly supporting the LGBTQ community, particularly um, around Pride month.
But Halsey is bisexual, has been out as bisexual, and everyone who pays even a smidge of attention would know she’s bisexual. But that didn’t mean she was just going to let the inane comment slide by.
“There’s been a flag in my show for 5 years,” she wrote back. “You’re just not paying attention you whiny little baby.”
While most fans were screeching gleefully at the savage response, some doubled down in support of the original comment, insisting that any display of a flag is commercialized pride. Related: those people are dumb.
Halsey, who came out in 2015, has repeatedly spoken out about the stigma bisexuals face both from the heteros and from within their own LGBTQ community.
“So if I’m dating a guy I’m straight, and if I date a woman, I’m a lesbian,” she tweeted in 2017. “The only way to be a #True bisexual is to date 2 people at once.”
(Those would be two very, very lucky people.)
But despite the haters, she’s been a strong voice for the community, recently ripping apart the concept of “Straight Pride” and leading concert-goers in a chant of “I will not be afraid” immediately following a horrible homophobic attack on a London bus.
She also has continuously portrayed same-sex relationships in her music, videos, and choreographed live performances.
Halsey doesn’t need to prove she’s not merely using the rainbow flag or her bisexuality as a marketing ploy, nor does anyone. But the fact that she continues to speak out and casually set the record straight (erm, so to speak) makes her a bi-con we would totally buy rainbow merch from should she decide to capitalize on it after all.
