Taylor Swift Gave a Surprise Performance at the Stonewall Inn
On the heels of releasing a new anti-homophobia single, Taylor Swift showed up as a surprise guest last night at the Stonewall Inn in NYC.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson invited Swift to perform as part of a celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which began on June 28, 1969.
“I’m so happy I don’t have to keep this secret any longer,” he tweeted. “Look who came to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall at the Stonewall Inn. @taylorswift13, you are a gem.”

Swift performed her 2014 single “Shake It Off” to an intimate crowd, saying she’d heard it’s Jesse favorite song to do at karaoke.
Taylor has been drumming up a storm of support for the LGBTQ community as of late. In addition to tearing down homophobia in “You Need to Calm Down” and basically puking rainbows in her previous single “ME!,” she also donated $113k to fight anti-LGBTQ legislation in Tennessee, has devoted her social media to a call to action in support of the Equality Act this month, and even used a promotional deal with Apple Music to draw attention to queer artists.
The singer also utilized her new single to promote GLAAD, which has reported a surge in $13 donations (Taylor’s favorite number) since “You Need to Calm Down” was released late Thursday night.
“The fact that she continues to use her platform and music to support the LGBTQ community and the Equality Act is a true sign of being an ally,” said Anthony Ramos of GLAAD. “‘You Need to Calm Down’ is the perfect Pride anthem, and we’re thrilled to see Taylor standing with the LGBTQ community to promote inclusivity, equality, and acceptance this Pride month.”
The music video for the new song will debut on Monday morning. And in the meantime, we’ll keep waiting to see if Taylor’s got any more surprise appearances up her sleeve for Pride!
