Love sure is in the air!
Or maybe there’s just something in the water.
Australian Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham announced his engagement to his boyfriend, Luke Rutherford, on Sunday.
“He got down on both knees, I said yes, and now we’re engaged,” he wrote, getting right to the point.
Rutherford had a slightly more sentimental outlook on the public declaration, wanting the world to know: “I’m the luckiest man in the world.”
The two met through mutual friends in Australia, and it wasn’t long before Mitcham decided to follow Rutherford back to the UK.
“Matt knew my visa was running out so we started brainstorming how we were going to make this work,” Rutherford told FNQ Magazine. “So he decided to come to the UK with me, much to my delight.”
The happy couple only just celebrated their six month anniversary in May, so it’s definitely been a whirlwind romance.
“I’ve been with this funny, passionate, energetic, caring, fun-loving, handsome man for six months. The longest six months of my life, but mostly because of much we’ve crammed into them,” Mitcham wrote on Instagram at the time.
Mitcham made history in the 2008 Summer Olympics when he became the first openly gay athlete to win an Olympic gold medal, and the first Australian to win gold in diving since 1924. He officially retired from diving in 2016 to pursue a career in showbusiness.
“I’ve had a really good run, and I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to do what I love for as long as I have. I look forward to still being involved in sport in one way or another, but I can’t wait to dive into this next chapter,” he said.
And now he has a new chapter of his relationship to dive into, as well. Congratulations, guys!
