Taylor Swift Posts Passionate Letter In Support of LGBTQ Rights
We're really loving this new outspoken Taylor.
No, it’s not the coming out letter some Swifties are still impatiently hoping for this era, but Taylor Swift is definitely showing she’s standing up for the LGBTQ community.
At midnight eastern time, Swift posted a letter she penned to her Senator, a passionate plea for him to support the Equality Act in the Senate to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination.
“I’ve decided to kick off Pride Month by writing a letter to one of my senators to explain how strongly I feel that the Equality Act should be passed,” she wrote to her fans on Instagram. “Politicians need votes to stay in office. Votes come from the people. Pressure from massive amounts of people is a major way to push politicians towards positive change.”
“Our country’s lack of protection for its own citizens ensures that LGBTQ people must live in fear that their lives could be turned upside down by an employer or landlord who is homophobic or transphobic. The fact that, legally, some people are completely at the mercy of the hatred and bigotry of others is disgusting and unacceptable.”
Taylor went on to share a link to a petition she created in support of the Equality Act. As of this posting, in the 14 hours it’s been up, it has gathered over 59,000 signatures.
Swift has been an outspoken ally of the LGBTQ community as of late, after a promise last year to stop being silent on political matters.
Last October, she urged people in her home state of Tennessee to go out and vote in the midterm for candidates that are willing to take a stand against racism, homophobia, and transphobia.
And earlier this year, she donated $113,000 to fight Tennessee’s “Slate of Hate,” a series of bills that would set back LGBTQ rights in the state and allow for further discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
The singer is currently at the beginning of what appears to be a very rainbow-fueled era in her career, leading some fans to speculate that Swift’s sudden alignment with LGBTQ causes is more than just allyship, though at the moment, that’s nothing more than speculation.
But regardless of her own identification, Taylor Swift is damn well sticking to her promise to no longer remain silent and to stand up for the things she believes in. We can’t wait to see what else she comes out with this Pride.
