A Los Angeles street artist who goes by the name Plastic Jesus is getting Hollywood ready for the Academy Awards.
The artist erected a golden statue of comedian Kevin Hart not too far from the award show venue, waving a rainbow flag and standing on a base with the words “Hollow Apology” written across it.
Clearly intended to mimic the golden statue given out for awards, the art piece is a scathing rebuke of Hart’s attempts at apologizing for his past words against the LGBTQ community.
In case you’ve already forgotten, Hart was set to host the Oscars this year, but an unearthing of homophobic jokes from his past prompted demands that he apologize, and rather than doing so immediately, he insisted he’d already done so in the past, and that they were just jokes.
Hart ultimately stepped down from his role as host rather than apologize at the Academy’s request, and though many called for him to be replaced with an LGBTQ comedian, and often particularly a black LGBTQ comedian, the show instead opted to proceed tomorrow with no host at all.
No one really knows what to expect from tomorrow, or if what inevitable commentary will be made about Hart’s absence as host. But Plastic Jesus has no qualms expressing his feelings about the situation, posting on Instagram:
"'AND THE WINNER IS…' This year’s Oscar statue ‘Hollow Apology’ featuring Kevin Hart. Over the past decades most countries have made great inroads fighting homophobia and hate, however the current divisive rhetoric seems to have taken us back to the 1970’s. So much of the Entertainment industry output comes from LGBTQ Individuals we should be celebrating it and not creating a hateful environment."
Hart has yet to respond, but just give it a few years and he'll probably say he did.
