Ellen Page visited The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night and wound up having some strong words for the current U.S. administration.
What started as a discussion about environmentalism and global warming quickly turned into a critique of the media’s lack of urgency when it comes to discussing issues that are plaguing our society right now.
"We have a media that’s saying it’s a debate what just happened to Jussie Smollett is a hate crime," she lamented. "It’s absurd. This shit isn’t a debate."
Page, who has been married to her wife Emma Portner for about a year now, then apologized for being so fired up, while also saying it’s impossible not to be with the current government, namely President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, "who, like, wishes I couldn’t be married, let’s just be clear."
She then urged people to draw the necessary connection between the current administration, current policies, and the recent rise in violence, specifically against LGBTQ people in America. And specifically when it comes to Mike Pence, who has accumulated a long history of anti-LGBTQ legislation and stances.
"And I think the thing we need to know, and I hope my show Gaycation did this, in terms of connecting the dots, in terms of what happened the other day to Jussie… connect the dots. This is what happens. If you are in a position of power and you hate people, and you want to cause suffering to them, you go through the trouble, you spend your career trying to cause suffering, what do you think is going to happen? Kids are going to be abused, and they’re going to kill themselves. People are going to be beaten on the street."
"I am lucky to have this time and the privilege to say this," she added. "This needs to fucking stop."
