Even Ellen couldn't fix this mess. It looks like Kevin Hart will not be hosting the 2019 Academy Awards, Deadline reports.
Hart, who was announced as the Oscars host last December and then resigned two days later after his anti-gay tweets resurfaced, made an appearance on Ellen's self-titled talk show last week to promote his latest movie The Upside. DeGeneres allowed Hart to explain his side of the story and apologize for his comments. Then, in a controversial move, she forgave him on behalf of the LGBTQ community and asked the Academy to reconsider his hosting position.
The interview didn't go over so well with many critics who weren't satisfied with an apology from someone backed into a corner. Instead of just talk, critics called for Hart to become an ally and use his platform for LGBTQ advocacy, specifically in the Black community.
Hart was encouraged by DeGeneres' acceptance of his apology and reconsidered hosting the Oscars again, says Deadline, but ultimately he didn't want his presence to be a distraction from the night's celebrations. Hart was also worried about not having enough time to prepare ahead of the show.
In lieu of a traditional host, The Oscars, premiering live on Sunday, February 24, 2019, will have several high-profile presenters.
