'Poetry Man' Singer Phoebe Snow Dies

“Poetry Man” singer Phoebe Snow has died at age 58 (although some sources report she was 60) from complications from a brain hemorrhage she suffered over a year ago. The two-time Grammy nominee, whose style was a mélange of folk, jazz and blues, rose to fame in the mid-seventies with the mega-hit “Poetry Man.” Snow put her music career on hold in 1975 to care for her daughter Valerie, who was born with severe brain damage. The chanteuse raised her daughter as a single mom when her husband left her when Valerie was just a baby.

The two-time Grammy nominee, with a style that was a mélange of folk, jazz and blues, rose to fame in the mid-seventies with the mega-hit “Poetry Man.”

A New York native Snow began her career playing clubs in Greenwich Village. Her eponymous first album hit number four on the charts and her second album Childhood hit gold.

Snow put her music career on hold in 1975 to care for her daughter Valerie, who was born with severe brain damage. The chanteuse raised her daughter as a single mom when her husband left her when Valerie was just a baby, according to NPR.

In the eighties Snow began to perform again contributing to commercial jingles, singing the A Different World theme song and dueting with the likes of Paul Simon and Jackson Browne.

Snow is survived by her sister and other relatives. Her daughter died in 2007.
