Don’t think for a minute that just because Showtime’s The L Word is in the books that Angela Robinson is laying low. The openly gay director of features including D.E.B.S. and Herbie: Fully Loaded has her hands full.
Robinson jumped to rival pay cabler HBO and, since January, has been serving as a writer and producer on HBO’s upcoming dramedy Hung, which revolves around Ray Drecker (Thomas Jane) a down-on-his-luck divorced father of two who “markets” his “biggest tool” and turns to the oldest profession in the book to make ends meet when his ex-wife (Anne Heche) won’t help him out.
“Ray’s son Damon (Charlie Saxton) is questioning his sexuality a little bit so there’s some fun plot lines to be had with that,” Robinson said of the show’s gay story line. “Charlie is an amazing actor, so he really brought a lot of humor, sensitivity and passion to (the role), so we’re probably going to examine not a post-gay, but how fluid teenagers are right now with not wanting to be labeled and not wanting to be put down but definitely experimenting with sexuality and what that’s about for themselves.”
In addition to Hung, Robinson said Wednesday at the Hung premiere in Hollywood that she’s also working on The Web, a comic book set to hit store shelves in September for DC Comics.
Asked if any LGBT themes can be expected to come from The Web, Robinson played it cool: “We just wrote the first issue, so we’ll see!”
With comics and TV covered and Web series Girltrash! already under her belt, the helmer has her sights set on bringing the series starring Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Margaret Cho, Gabrielle Christian (South of Nowhere) and Rose Rollins (The L Word) to the big screen.
“I’m writing the movie of Girltrash! the Web series my partner and I made a number of years back,” she said. “That is out to directors. It’s scheduled to begin shooting in December.”
Hung premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. PST on HBO.
