Daniel Radcliffe to Receive Trevor Project Hero Award

Harry Potter and Broadway star, Daniel Radcliffe, will soon be honored by the Trevor Project, the leading organization for suicide prevention among the LGBTQ youth. The Trevor Project began in the 1990’s based on the 1994 Academy Award winning short film, Trevor, the story about a gay 13-year-old boy who attempted to take his life after being rejected by his friends because of his sexuality. The organization is mostly known for their 24 hour 7 day a week call center, which provides counseling for youth in crisis.

Harry Potter and Broadway star, Daniel Radcliffe, will soon be honored by the Trevor Project, the leading organization for suicide prevention among the LGBTQ youth, reports the Associated Press.

The Trevor Hero Award is given to an individual who is an inspiration to LGBTQ youth and “increases visibility and understanding of the LGBTQ community.” Since 2009, Radcliffe has been working with the organization—appearing in public service announcements and vocalizing the work of the Trevor Project. “The people that are doing the heroic things are the people answering phones 24 hours a day in the Trevor call center,” he said.

“The fact that they think of what I’ve done by promoting awareness of the Trevor Project itself and the issues that it works to promote and help is a great honor,” Radcliffe explained to the Associated Press. “I think that, out of everything that I’ve done so far in my career, I think this is absolutely one of the most important, if not the most important, thing that I’m associated with.”

The ceremony will take place in New York in June.
