Emmy Award winning actress Cynthia Nixon has signed to do four episodes of Showtime’s upcoming series, The Big C.

The Sex and The City star will play Rebecca, a flaky former college roommate of Cathy, played by Laura Linney. Cathy is a reserved suburban wife, mother and teacher whose terminal cancer diagnosis gives her a new, humorous although dark perspective on life. Oliver Platt plays her immature husband and Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) plays a precocious student.

New Your City-born Nixon began her acting career at age 12 on an ABC TV Afterschool Special. She has appeared in a variety of movies and Broadway shows and is best known for her role as Miranda Hobbs in the HBO comedy Sex and the City, for which she won an Emmy Award, and in the movies based on the series. She won a Best Actress Tony Award in 2006 for the Rabbit Hole and another Emmy for her guest appearance on Law & Order: SUV.

Last year, Nixon announced her engagement to long-time partner Christine Marinoni.

The Big C will premiere August 16 on Showtime at 10:30 ET/PT.
