Actors Brooke Vincent and Sacha Parkinson made history with British prime time soap
Coronation Street's first-ever lesbian kiss. A unique moment as "Corrie," as it's affectionately called, is now in its 50th year and this is the first lesbian story line to hit the
Street. Brooke's 15-year-old Sophie Webster is the youngest daughter in the Street's long established Webster family. The Websters have just endured major trauma as mum, Sally, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
Rewind to last year: Sophie discovered Christianity, joined a bible class and met Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson). When Sophie's bible class boyfriend dumped her, Sian stepped in and became her baptism buddy. They became joined-at-the-hip best friends who took a vow of chastity together. A vow that Sian later broke with boyfriend Ryan.
Present time: Sian is forced to move to Southport with her mother. Both girls are devastated. They text, phone and video chat constantly. They can't bear to be apart, and Sian arranges to visit.
When Sian is forced to move she leaves her devastated boyfriend Ryan behind too. Sophie offers him words of comfort, but he takes it the wrong way and he tries to kiss her. Sophie is furious and storms off threatening to tell Sian.
Sian arrives and Sophie tells her about the kiss. Ryan, when confronted, lies, and blames Sophie saying she tried to kiss him. The girls argue; Sophie stands her ground.

(continued)
In the wake of his lie Ryan and Sian are lovey dovey again until something clicks with Sian. Deep down she knows Sophie doesn't lie. She confronts Ryan who admits to deceiving her.
Upon learning the truth Sian rushes to Sophie's house to salvage their friendship. In Sophie's bedroom the girls share an intense scene, which ends with Sophie kissing Sian. Not once -- but twice. Sian panics, and takes off back to Southport closely followed by Sophie, who slips out of the house behind her father's back.
Back at Sian's home in Southport the girls exchange heated words. Sian is angry and aggressive, telling Sophie she will not be her experiment, that she is not like her -- a lesbian. Those are fighting words!
Reeling from Sian's admonishment Sophie attempts to explain that she's not experimenting, that she doesn't know who or what she is right now. Sian's response is to order her to leave and come back when she does know. So what exactly is Sian looking for?
It's no surprise the sensitively written and beautifully acted topped viewer ratings for the night.
It's good to know that this will unfold as a love story over the next few months taking both girls through life changing situations. How will their families react? Their friends? And what about the Church? Will it be a bumpy ride?
Of course it will! Watch for more updates of The Street.
